Coaching

Who is it for?

Designed for executive directors, senior managers, and others in decision-making positions, the Public Policy Institute coaching program allows leaders to apply learning and receive candid feedback as they actively pursue a policy goal. The coaching mainly focuses on the transfer of skills that have been gained over the years, one policy campaign at a time.

What is covered?
The Public Policy Institute's customized coaching program consists of weekly conferences, thoughtful review of materials, email discussions, and strategy consulting. Participants will design a winning public policy campaign based on their organization's mission and internal capacity.

Suggested organizational development activities might include:

  • A series of trainings and briefings of board staff and members outlining how non-profit organizations can participate in the public policymaking process.
  • Tried and true techniques for influence public policy and the basic elements of a winning campaign and strategic thinking and doing skills.
  • Gaining a better understanding of lobbying restrictions and allowances consistent with IRS guidelines for 501(c)3 organizations.

Organizational leaders are guided through a strategic thinking process to help them measure the political feasibility of their policy idea. From start to finish, they will benefit from one-on-one dialogue, political insight, and step-by-step instruction to help direct a public policy campaign.

Five Essential Activities in a Legislative Campaign
  1. Identify key leaders and opinion makers in the legislature who have the power and authority to move your policy solution.

  2. Recruit some of those legislators to play the role of a hero.

  3. Create a hero opportunity by presenting your problem as a sympathetic, compelling problem that needs to be fixed, and your solution as a doable, affordable, and effective resolution.

  4. Assess your capacity and power in the legislature. Increase it, if necessary, by recruiting untraditional allies into a coalition.

  5. Present your compelling and sympathetic problem along with its affordable and effective solution to the right legislators at the right time, accompanied by affected constituents in concert with a public awareness campaign.
